Veteran health care executive Larry Schreiber is the new president and CEO of SantaFe HealthCare, the operator of Miami-based health maintenance organization AvMed and other health-related businesses.
Schreiber previously served as president and CEO of Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield of New York and CEO of the Wisconsin Collaborative Insurance Co., a joint venture between Milwaukee’s Aurora Health Care and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Wisconsin launched in 2016 that operates under the brand name Well Priority.
Schreiber led Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield in Wisconsin as president until December 2015 when he joined Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield. With the launch of Well Priority, he held dual roles leading the new venture while continuing to run Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield in New York. He previously held several executive positions at UnitedHealth Group and Midwest Security Insurance Cos.
“Larry brings a wealth of knowledge to our organization that will help advance our mission and vision for the future,” Glenda Hood, chair of the SantaFe HealthCare board of directors, said in a statement. “His decades of experience in the healthcare industry will be an asset as SantaFe HealthCare continues to grow and evolve.”
Schreiber will fill the role left by former SanteFe HealthCare CEO Michael Gallagher, who announced his resignation in February after 12 years at the helm of the Gainesville, Florida-based company.
AvMed was ranked the eighth-largest firm by enrollment in South Florida Business Journal’s Book of Lists. AvMed had almost 118,000 enrollees as of March 2018, the most recent figures available.
In addition to AvMed, SantaFe HealthCare operates Haven, an advanced illness, palliative care and hospice services company, and multiple retirement communities, including East Ridge at Cutler Bay, The Village at Gainesville and The Terraces at Bonita Springs.
