There’s some good news for the franchise that employed Joe Montana and Steve Young: Jimmy Garoppolo could end the 49ers’ pathetic passing streaks.

At the season’s midway mark, Garoppolo has 1,806 yards and 13 touchdowns, which are relatively modest numbers that place him 21st and 12th in the NFL, respectively.

However, those figures qualify as stunning in Santa Clara: Garoppolo is on pace to throw for 3,612 yards and 26 touchdowns for a franchise that hasn’t had a quarterback throw for at least 3,500 yards or 25 touchdowns since Jeff Garcia did both in 2001.

The 49ers are the only team to not have a 3,500-yard passer in the 17-plus seasons since 2001. The 49ers and Bills are the only teams to not have a QB throw for 25 touchdowns in a season since 2001.

A look at some other notable numbers:

• Garoppolo has a 100.6 passer rating. The 49ers haven’t had a QB post a passer rating over 100.0 who qualified among the NFL leaders since Steve Young in 1998 (101.1).

• Garoppolo’s 1,806 passing yards best the season high for the 49ers in 2017, 2007 and 2005.

• The 49ers have had just three 2,900-yard passing seasons since 2003.

• A flurry of benched QBs helps explain the above figure. A partial list of the 49ers’ starters who have been demoted during the season: J.T. O’Sullivan, 2008; Shaun Hill, 2009; Alex Smith, 2010; Smith, 2012; Colin Kaepernick, 2015; Blaine Gabbert, 2016; Brian Hoyer, 2017; C.J. Beathard, 2018.

• On a related note: The 49ers are among three teams, along with the Titans and Dolphins, who haven’t ranked among the NFL’s top 10 in yards gained or points scored since 2003. They rank third in points and seventh in yards this season.

• Since 2001, the 3,500-yard threshold has been cleared 224 times in the NFL.

• Since 2001, the 25-touchdown threshold has been cleared 162 times by NFL quarterbacks.

• The 49ers’ TD-passing streak is embarrassing, but it’s not the worst: The Bills haven’t had a QB throw for 25 touchdowns since Jim Kelly in 1991 — when George H.W. Bush was president.
